What is Yard Management in SAP EWM

The yard is the physical area outside the warehouse, where trucks, trailers, containers, and other transportation units arrive and wait before loading or unloading.

Yard Management (YM) in SAP EWM helps you:

  • Control and monitor movements of vehicles and transportation units in the yard.

  • Manage check-in/check-out, parking, and dock assignment.

  • Integrate with warehouse processes (inbound, outbound, cross-docking).

Key Elements in Yard Management

  1. Yard Layout

    • Divided into Yard Bins (just like storage bins inside warehouse).

    • Yard bins represent parking spaces, checkpoints, or doors/docks.

  2. Yard Resource Objects

    • Vehicle: e.g., truck, trailer.

    • Transportation Unit (TU): The object representing the load carrier (container, truck + load).

  3. Yard Movements

    • Check-in / Check-out: Register vehicle entering/leaving yard.

    • Move: Assign a TU from one yard bin (parking) to another (loading door).

    • Docking / Undocking: Position TU at a specific door for loading/unloading.

Yard Management Process Flow

  1. Check-In

    • Truck arrives at the gate → Security checks documents.

    • TU created in SAP EWM → Vehicle registered in the yard.

  2. Parking Assignment

    • TU is placed in a yard bin (parking space) until a dock is free.

  3. Move to Door/Dock

    • TU moved to assigned door (yard bin linked to warehouse door).

  4. Loading/Unloading

    • Inbound: Goods unloaded from TU → Goods Receipt process.

    • Outbound: Goods packed and loaded into TU → Goods Issue process.

  5. Check-Out

    • After loading/unloading, TU leaves yard → Security confirms check-out.
