Picking is the process of retrieving products from their storage bins in the warehouse to fulfill a customer order or delivery requirement.
How Picking Works in EWM

Sales Order → Outbound Delivery is created in ERP and replicated to EWM.

Warehouse Request (OBD in EWM) is generated.

Picking Tasks (Warehouse Tasks) are created.

Example: “Pick 20 pcs of Material A from Bin 01-01-01”.

Warehouse operator executes picking using RF devices, desktop transactions, or pick lists.

Picked goods are moved to the staging area or work center for packing.

2. Packing in SAP EWM
Packing is the process of placing picked items into Handling Units (HUs) such as cartons, crates, or pallets to prepare them for shipping.
How Packing Works in EWM

After picking, goods arrive at a packing work center.

The system suggests packaging materials (carton, pallet, box) based on Packaging Specifications (Pack Spec).

Items are scanned/packed into an HU.

Labels (HU labels, SSCC) are printed.

Packed HUs are staged for loading and transportation.
